'Hotel air conditioner' for house?

I'be been thinking about installing an air conditioner in my bedroom for a long time. What do you all think about using a PTAC or 'hotel air conditioner' for a residential bedroom? It sort of appeals to me because they are low mounted and not so unsightly.

A thru-the-wall PTAC ?

You still need a compressor either in the unit or mounted outside.
I'd consider a ductless split unit where the unit mounts high up on the wall.

Yes. I was thinking of a thru the wall PTAC. I would definitely want the whole think self-contained with compressor. Would one one ductless mini split unit cool one 10ft X 10ft bedroom?

I have installed the through the wall heat pumps for add on's to compliment the house's full heat pump. They work great. Technology has gone ape over the last few years, though, and I like the mini splits even better. Little wall space needed and all the noise is outside.

Not to mention that Mini splits only need a 4" hole through the wall.

Mini split scan cool one room or an entire house depending on the size and type of unit(s).

Mini splits are great and cheap to run but way to expensive to just cool one room.
If your just cooling the room and not also heating then you want the unit as high as possible.
Cold air falls, leaves more room to place furniture.

Yeah. The price of ductless mini-split for one room seems awful high. I would want the unit to cool and heat. The PTAC is cheaper and there is plenty of space under the window. I might have to re-route wall outlet wiring. I'll listen to any suggestions. I'm not doing this till after September.

Are the newer PTAC units quieter than the old ones? Some were so loud that it was difficult to sleep.

That's a good point Astuff. I'm one of those people that finds white noise and fan noise soothing at night. I had to spend Sunday night in a hotel while waiting to purchase parts for my broken home A/C. The PTAC in that room was noisy. But it cooled well and I had no trouble sleeping. But what you're mentioning is still a good thing for me to be aware of for the long term

The PTAC unit will require extensive re-framing of the wall to make the opening safe. It is not just re-framing but exterior walls are usually load bearing and it would have to be designed to transfer the load around both the window and the unit.

Yeah. The reframing and load bearing aspect you mention would take some thought and planning for sure. I've never done this before.

I have been looking for a quiet portable unit (any kind) for 2 years, I just can not find one. They can not compare to central air or mini split, not even close. You said the noise won't bother you, but still, think twice before you make the final decision.
