Replace 16 year-old AC capacitor?

Greetings!

I have a central AC Trane XL 1000 that's 16 years old.

I am considering replacing the capacitor as preventative maintenance.

On the other hand, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is usually best advice.

My questions:

1. Is the capacitor a wear part that's bound to fail?
2. If so, is 16 years of seasonal use (Minneapolis area) close to the expected lifespan?
3. Would it make more sense to buy a spare and keep it on hand for if/when the existing one blows rather than replacing it outright?

I would go ahead and replace it. 16 years it could go any time.

I'd agree with that.

I keep spare parts like that on hand so that I have them if needed. My A/C is over 25 years old with original cap although that means nothing as a cap can go at any time.

I would consider replacing an old contactor as more of a preventative step.

Thanks, Pjmax. I'm going to shelve it and have it on hand for if/when the old one blows.
