AC cools for a little while then airflow stops

Our upstairs unit starts off cooling and seems to work like a good working AC unit, but after some time, maybe 30 minutes, the airflow stops. We can still hear the unit running, but turn it off immediately.

I change the filter regularly and vacuum the vents, so it should be an issue with blockage. Any idea what the issue could be? Is it possible it could simply be low on freon? When this happened on our main level a few years ago, it wouldn't cool at all. This is different. It cools initially, but then the airflow stops.

Typically when the air flow stops it is because the evaporator has iced up solid and air can no longer get through it. This happens when it is low on Freon, but not out. It needs to be charged properly.

Thanks for the reply. Is it possible for someone without experience to be able to DYI by reading or watching DYI videos, or is this something best left to HVAC professionals?

There are two units..... inside and outside. Which one do you still hear running ?

No airflow signifies a problem with the blower in the air handler, especially icing up like T mentioned.

A low refrigerant issue must be handled by an HVAC tech as he has the license to dispense refrigerants.

Ok. So if you hear the blower running but don't get any air flow.... that would be the coil icing up. If the airflow feels strong when first starting the A/C..... then you need to have the refrigerant level checked.
