Need help understanding split systems

I am adding AC to a 2500sq ft house in Vancouver, BC. We plan on using two split systems, because of the limited access for adding ducts. We are thinking about two quad units with 1 Ton capacity each. My question is what cooling capacity does any one evaporator have if it is the only one running? Is it 1T, 1/4T or something in between?

Not really understand your question, but I am guessing the answer is 1/4T since only one of them running.

Different manufacturers have different ratings. We would have to know which one you were looking at

We are trying to select a model now. I am thinking about a Fujitsu, but I need to know what to look for. We are considering two quad units (each with 1 condenser and 4 evaporators). We were trying to decide if we should use one quad system for upstairs and one for downstairs, or if each system should be split to have two units upstairs and two downstairs. If we had them split so each condenser ran two units upstairs and two downstairs, then would we have more cooling capacity upstairs if the downstairs area is not being cooled at night?
