A/C zone integrity -- curtain instead of a door?

For aesthetic reasons, my spouse wants to use a closely-fitted, weighted curtain instead of a door to seal our dining/lining room area and ensure we're not trying to cool the adjacent stairwell.

I say we need a real door for A/C efficiency.

But I would love her to be right, as long as I don't have to implement both solutions and do an electric bill comparison to find out. Would a heavy curtain really close off the room for A/C purposes?

Thanks in advance!

A curtain would help to close the room off and to reduce the flow of cold air but it will not be as effective as an actual door.
