Frost on window AC unit

Hi,

Yesterday I noticed my in the window AC unit had a block of ice on the fins. I let it defrost with just the fan on and it all melted fine. Now, I restarted the unit and its not building up a large amount of ice (like I found yesterday) but I do see frost forming along 2 pipes and one row of fins. The frost melts instantly when the unit cycles. The frost always starts on the two pipes below.

Is this a problem if the frost melts itself and isn't accumulating? Does the frost starting on the pipe indicate what the issue may be?

I would guess it is getting low on Freon. Usually time for a new one. See dark stain on coils that is usually a sign of a leak

Thanks, I've only had it since March, it does run a lot, but doesn't that seem like a short amount of time for it to go bad?

I have, but would that cause the pipe to frost like that? It happens within about a minute of the unit coming on and then defrosts within seconds of the unit cycling off.

You are low on refrigerant. Since you bought it in March.... see if you can get it replaced.

As more of the refrigerant leaks out.... there will less area that gets frosted until there wont be any frost at all.
