non-toxic soundproofing fabric?
We got a new house, and even though the closet AC unit is new there's an annoying high-pitched whine that echoes through the house. It's not unbearable, and if I could just muffle it a little I'd be happy. Or at least cut down on the higher pitch sound. I would rather not replace the door, since it's original for the house (1940).
I was thinking of hanging some sort of inexpensive noise-blocking blanket in the AC closet, but I don't want anything even remotely toxic being dispersed through the house. Most of the industrial blankets I see online are synthetic and I can't figure out the material or construction well enough to be comfortable. I was thinking of a heavy cotton or canvas, but I'm having trouble finding anything thick (and I'm guessing canvas won't do much muffling) and reasonably priced.
Any ideas? It's not a closet we'd open up much; basically we're just going to store toilet paper rolls underneath the unit, so we will not be opening it a lot.

Your best option would probably be completely covering the ceiling and walls with convoluted acoustic foam panels.
As for the comment about non-toxic, that's an interesting dilemma. Pretty much anything man made is toxic. So not sure where you are going there. Your carpet and upholstery is probably the most toxic thing in your house... Toxic when it burns?

Thanks! You mean the ceiling and walls of the closet? What would be a good adhesive?
I actually work in environmental toxics so I'm probably way overly sensitive, but my main issue is with the AC closet specifically because it is going to be constantly pulling in whatever's in the closet air and blowing it through the house.

Depends on the product specifications and what they recommend. PL polyurethane is one, but can't say that would work with every product. Check the mfg's installation instructions to be sure.
