Ceiling drywall edge attachment point is a vent to furnace
See pic---there is a floor joist in the 'middle' of the furnace venting. On the far left side I do not see any place where we can nail the edge of the ceiling drywall tight. Any suggestions/thoughts?

You don't need to nail the edge. When the piece goes on the wall, it will get shoved tight to the ceiling, so nailing the edge of the ceiling is immaterial.
But where you dont have metal pan, you will want 2x4 blocking perpendicular to the joists... (every 24" or so) to prevent the pieces you put on the wall from bending the ceiling if you happen to push it up TOO high.

Thanks XSleeper, that makes sense (wall drywall will support that edge of the ceiling drywall)....and also thanks for the advice to add 2X4 blocking in that floor joist cavity that doesn't have the metal pan.
