So I now have a hole in my basement floor...

So I decided I wanted to replace the floor in my basement. Took up the old carpet, and found this circular crack about a food in diameter. When I tapped it with a hammer it sounded hollow. I was able to get a flat headed screwdriver in the crack and to my surprise, the piece of concrete lifted out.

Any thoughts on how to proceed? Mix up some concrete and fill it in?
Should I be really worried about this? I know basement slabs can crack, but I've never seen a chunk come out.

The house is about 30 years old, and for the 5 that I've owned it I've never once had a water or moisture problem in the basement.

The crack leading towards the right disappears under a wall (this is in a hallway), and all the floors are finished in that direction so I have no idea what's going on that way.

You never had a water problem? Why do I see a redish hue on the edges of the hole and the chunk that was taken out? I'm no expert by a long shot, but that looks like a stress crack to me.

Like to see what the experts have to say.

It also looks like poorly mixed concrete.

Pete, good catch. Can't tell from the photo but the thickness seems shallow by the time it gets to the drainage aggregate.

Thanks for the responses.

Well, I haven't had any water issues in the 5 years that I've owned the place. Could've been at one point I agree.

I removed some of the gravel and measured the thickness of the slab around the perimeter of the hole and it's about 3.5 inches, however the chunk that came out isn't as thick. Seems like there was definitely a high point in the aggregate.

Guess I should engage the pros eh?

I'd be inclined to clean up the hole and pour new concrete myself.
What type of floor covering are you considering?
