crawl space foundation musty smell

when there is a good amount of rain, the musty smell is very strong in the living room and upstairs especially when the heater (central hvac) turns on...any idea to what might be causing the smell and what can be done to reduce or eliminate (the house does have a crawl space)? Thank you

You need to find the cause of the odor. Is there water in the crawl space? Ducts running through there or anywhere else water might be coming in?

I agree, you need to find the source of the moisture and eliminate it. Sounds like the crawlspace is the first place to look. Does the crawlspace have adequate ventilation? or is it closed/sealed up and conditioned by the HVAC or a dehumidifier?
Heat will often accentuate odors.
btw - welcome to the forums!

Did you crawl down in there? What do things look like in there?

Checked the ducts for air leaks?
Vapor barrier on the ground in the crawl space?
Working gutters?
Any standing water in the crawl space?
Grade running away from the foundation and no mulch or flower beds forming ponds up against the foundation?
