basement closet size question

Hi, I am going to be starting the process of finishing my basement, which is approx 900 sq ft. I want to make closets on one half of a wall about 12 feet. It would have 2 double doors. My question is what depth should the closet be, I know standard is 24", but i think bigger would make more sense but not sure. It would only be used for toys and things like that, No clothes. Is there a size that gets too big for a storage closet? Any ideas whats a good depth? Thanks

It all depends on what you want. Too big? That depends on how large the items are you want to store. Personally I don't like closets or shelves deep enough to have things piled two deep as stuff in back tends to get lost.

I'm not also fond of deep closets unless it becomes a walk in closet.

I was thinking 28" as some of the boxes i have are approx 27". Is that to deep as I could turn them sideways and go smaller.

That should work fine, are you taking into account the thickness of the drywall [or whatever wall covering]?

Closet Depth

Also think about shelving to be installed and the necessary dimensions.

I sized mine so I could fit in two of the larger roll around wire shelving units, with room enough to swing them in and out. I think they are more flexible than fixed shelving or even adjustable shelving, and very convenient to be able to roll them out when searching for something.

The big closet in the basement has 3 shelves 4' deep so full sheets of 3/4 plywood, then the top 2 shelves are about 2' deep.

Each is tall enough to accept the big fold top storage containers which hold all the kids Legos. Nerf, and what every they have.

Bigger is always better!

bigger is better but with deep shelves you don't have easy access to the items at the back.

Also keep in mind that if all the shelves are equal width and take up the entire closet, you won't be able to put anything on the top shelf if you don't allow room for it. (Blocked by door header) The top shelf either needs to be narrower, or you need to allow an extra 12" (or so) of room between the shelves and the door if you expect to get anything of size on a top shelf that is at head level or above.

top 2 shelves are about 2' deep

Big storage containers, easy to reach, easy to pull out!
