Want to install attic stairs
I will have to CUT some joist in attic (about 50-60 in long). What is the best or correct way of reinforcing before I cut them. A picture would be best if possible to show what it would look like.

Need a picture from you first.
Is it being installed in a hallway with walls on both sides?
Read the install directions on the set of stairs you plan on installing, all that info should be right there.

Ceiling Joists
Are your ceiling joists actually bottom chords of roof trusses? If so, do not cut the trusses.
As has been said, attic stairs are designed to fit between ceiling joists spaced 24 in. OC.

I want to chime in also.... Do not install the ladder perpendicular to the joists.
If it's not possible to fit the long dimension in between existing joists, then there isn't room for the ladder.
