wet basement

2 things, new house, built in 1937. there is a floor drain in the basement full of water, now I know its a trap and should have water in it but its full to the brim, shouldnt the out flow be way lower than the brim? and yes it works, the laundry is drained into it and it drains fine. I just dont understand why its visibly full.

second , had a heavy rain last night and a few low spots in the basement pooled but the sump pit is bone dry, what happened here?

Yes, the input before the trap shouldn't be filled to the drain top. Where does it daylight? Can you run a snake through it and see if that lowers it? New washers don't use a ton of water but if it's that high now it's hard to believe it doesn't overflow inside.

Has it always been like that since you've been there?

Any photos of the sump area and where it's pooling?

Yes, you have a project on your hands. You need to determine where the drain is delivering that water (as kramttocs asked) and you need to find out why your sump pit is dry. Built in it 37 is going to be difficult as it won't be following modern guidelines.

Is your property flat or does it slope away on one or all sides?
Discharging your washer into that drain is probably not the best as it ultimately turns the soil to sludge.

Your local building department may have some drawing to help.

Maybe in 1937 it was okay for the washing machine to drain into a floor drain. It's supposed to drain into the sewer line now. At least that's the code where I live. If you have a wet vac, suck the water out of the floor drain. See what comes out with it.

As far as the sump pump goes, it sounds like it's in the wrong place. It's supposed to be at the low spot. Where is the water entering? Is there a high water table?
