From the location of the pipe if it's the same one coming off the top of the boiler that is your supply pipe going to the baseboard.
Your return line is the one on the pump and your supply is the one coming off the top.
Where does that line go. With it closed how are you getting any heat. With that valve closed you shouldn't be getting any heat. If you are then you have to see where that line is going.
From what I can see in the pic it should be open but if everything is working would need more pics and info of where the pipe goes.
More detailed pics if possible.
Hope this helps a little.

That was quick Spott. I added an enlarged pic but not what you are asking for.
You can post pics directly to the board.... How-to-insert-pictures

Pete,
I enlarged what was posted but it doesn't make any sense. They have the supply line valved off and they never mentioned he didn't have heat. It was more of a curiosity question it seemed.
He has a split loop return and I can see only that single line going out. It must split somewhere, probably after the expansion tank but unless there is another supply line somewhere and they're using that as some kind of equalizer which makes no sense because of the location I cannot see how they are getting any heat.

Yes in the pic the valve is closed. I had a pipe freeze and break today and in my panic of turning the water off I might have turned the valve off, but didn't specifically remember doing so.
I have wood heat also do the boiler don't run all the time. That and a leaky door did it.
I hope to add anitfreeze to the boiler next weekend
If anybody has a tutorial on how to do that, it would be great
