Just installed an new spring and coupler and am thinking they are supposed to be "coupled" after setting the set screws with allen wrench to motor spindles.

Welcome. The two halves are coupled by the springs. It's been a bit since I did one, but should be 4 springs as I recall.

My solution would be to replace the pump with a wet-rotor pump.

A picture of the pump and coupler would be helpful. When you tightened the allen screws did they go into the shaft indentations? They are easy to install correctly, once you get the "hang" of it . Did you use the right coupler? How old is this pump and motor?
