Painting old rock wall

The house was built in 1967. I don't know how old the rock is. It may have been there as far back as 1967 as well.

I want it painted.

Do I need a special primer paint?

Do I need a special paint?

Do I need to clean the rock and mortar?

No paint is going to stick to stone and if you do paint it plan on it just failing and become an eyesore.
Is this in a basement?

How porous is the stone? Does it stay dry? where is it?

Generally the cleaner the substrate is the better the coating applied will adhere.
