Paving around column

hello all,
Any advice would be helpful. I am paving my patio right now and have a column I need to go around. The column has a base cover. I know you will not see how close the pavers are cut to the post(because the cover will cover it), but I’m not sure if I have to cut them a quarter of an inch close all the way around the column so the when the pavers are compacted they don’t move? Or can I lay square pieces as close to the pole as possible and fill with sand( no round cuts)? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Tiling over cinder block in basement in cold Rochester NY

Hello All... Was hoping for a bit of advice / help ! I have seen topics on this previously but thought my case was a bit different than those others I read threads on. Problem One - My basement stair stringers are flat against the cinder block wall providing only the thickness of that stringer to play around with wall options. One option that I was contemplating would eliminate the need for framing, furring strips and insulation.....that thought being some sort of fun tile. I would like to also have it be known that the wall I am referring to IS NOT what I would consider an outside wall since the garage in on the other side (obviously one level up though). So here are the questions... 1) Am I able to bond a stone veneer or whatever tile directly onto the Cinder blocks? For the limited amount of area I would be tiling (maybe 130 sf) I would be willing to sacrifice the insulation factor. 2) The Cinder block does not currently have any sealant applied....IF there is any type of moisture seepage though the wall would the thinset adhere to both the tile and the wall? Would a specific thinset be required ? Any suggestions would be appreciated! TY Jeff

PIC ATTACHED! Hello All, I am working on refinishing my basement and during removal of old framing I noticed WET - FINE MUD / SLUDGE in the floating slab gap. Upon closer inspection I noticed in a corner where 2 blocks come together there is a quarter inch gap which runs about 3 inches HIGHER than the slab floor and as far down as I can see. I can only guess that's the source of the fine deposit and water collecting in the channel....?!? While there is no down spout outside directly above that area of the house that drains in that area, the ground MAY be a bit lower forcing the water towards the house. Is that un-mortared space in the blocks by design? To me is seems like there are a few problems that need to be addressed to solve the problem. Do I want to seal the gap in the blocks??? How? Getting water routed away from the house in that area? Removing the sludge from the channel to allow for better drainage? It would be much appreciated if anyone could answer any / all of those questions! BIG Thanks Jeff If anyone happens to have
