how to fill a gap

Am using Schluter All-Set thinset for slate round an OLD pool over Ditra. Is working. But a question please…

See pic below.

The coping is a cement cantilever slab. With a horizontal slate on top and a vertical slate on the edge. And from time to time the vertical slates fall off and I chip off the old mortar.

For unclear reasons, the horizontal slate over the cantilever extends beyond the cement slab by say 1.5”.

So to replace the vertical slate and get it to align with the horizontal slate I must fill the 1.5” gap with something.

How best to fill the 1.5” gap?

Ideally the top slate would be cut to the proper size so the cap strip can be bonded to the concrete. Anything other than that is a Band Aid fix. I suppose you could pack mortar into the cavity to try and provide some support and backing for the cap strip.
