How do you install crown molding to full face cabinets.

I am trying to install crown molding to full face door cabinets (cab). There is about 3/16-1/4 in off space on top of the doors. The only way I can think of doing it is to put 3/4 by 3/4 or 3/4 by 1 in on top of the cab. So I can attach the crown molding to top of cab. Shouldn't the crown molding just sit on the very top of the cab.

Picture would be great so we can see exactly what your dealing with.
It's common to have to add some form of backer to attach crown to cabinets.

Yes, that's exactly what you need to do... put a backer on the top of the cabinets to raise the bottom of the crown above the doors. Its usually best if the backer is made of the same material as the cabinets... and it is installed so that it protrudes just the right amount (around 5/8"-3/4") so that once the crown is applied to the face, it makes the bottom profile of the crown appear flush with the cabinet doors.

Yeah, this is called full overlay crown. Some manufacturers sell it preassembled with the bottom nailer, but not worth the extra cost.
