Question Beginner Diy on mounting mirrors onto table.

Hi everyone,

Trying to improve on an IKEA chest of drawers (1st picture) to a mirror bedside table like this one (2nd picture). Would like to ask the experts, what is the material of the white decoration thing shown in the 2nd picture? And any tips for such DIY as this is going to be my first project? Thanks!

Hard to say, could be wood, could be plastic. If I were going to make that decorative piece, I'd buy 1/4" thick MDF (medium density fiberboard), which comes in 4x8 foot sheets. You can buy smaller pieces at the Home Depot. Then I'd trace the design and cut it out with a jig saw. You drill a hole in each area of the cutout so you can insert the jigsaw blade.

After some sanding (OK, a lot of sanding) to clean up the cutting marks and slightly round over the edges, it would be ready for a couple of coats of paint, Then you would glue it onto the mirror.

MDF is not very strong, especially in 1/4 thickness, but it cuts and sands easily and paints well, and is plenty strong for an overlay like that.

On the mirrors I would suggest getting them custom made by a shop with finished edges. If you cut your own they will have VERY sharp edges.
