Need help using router
I have a project where I have to have a 5/16" slot about 4 inches long in a piece wood that is 6" x 6" x .25". Is this something that could be done with a router? I have never used one and would appreciate information on what type of router to use (fixed, plunge) and what type of bit to use. Would I need a router table, or could I set up a template? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Will the slot be open to an edge, or in the middle of the piece? Will the ends be round or square? If open to the edge, a fixed base would work. Or, if closed on both ends, you could drill one end or both and still use a fixed base router. A router table might be the easiest method, but you could clamp the piece to a larger piece of scrap in order to have something to clamp guides to. Or you could drill holes at each end of the slot and use a jig saw. Or you could drill a series of holes and finish the slot with a rasp.
