kitchen cabinet door ajar

Hi. In my new apartment, I have one kitchen cabinet door that will not stay closed. It opens about one inch after I try to close it. I'll add a link to show the type of hinge. I tried tightening all the screws on the top and bottom hinges and nothing changed. I also tried switching the hinges but that did not help. It looks like the renter before me tried the same things since the screw heads are quite roughed up. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Looks like a cheap hinge, it's internal spring is probably shot. Lowes or HD will have them. 35mm cup hinge, face frame, check your overlay (how much the door overlaps the face frame when closed.) 1/2" - 3/4" is pretty common. They are probably $5 a pair.

I suggest you purchase a Pozi #2 Phillips Screw Driver in addition to the new hinges.
The small pozi screws are hard to turn and a regular Philips driver will strip the head. Here's an example:

Thanks

Thank you for the reply. I tried Lowes and they did not have this type of hinge. They suggested that I tighten the screws. They did not seem to note any internal spring. I'll try Home Depot next and look for that Pozi #2 Screw Driver. I'm sure the hinges are cheap ones. Thanks, again.

Thanks.

Thank you. I'll pick up those Blum hinges tomorrow and see how they work out.
Looks like 1/2 inch overlay on the doors.

Once you install the hinges X linked to, you will probably be wanting to change a few more hinges in the kitchen.
These are much better than what you have and the door will be adjustable.

Sometimes a shim under the hinge where it attached to the cabinet will compensate for the tight misaligned fit. If you loosen the screws attaching it to the cabinet does it change the orientation of the door?

No, not that I can notice. There are 15 cabinet doors in the kitchen and the hinge all identical. Only this one door has the problem of not closing. Thanks for the idea.

Smile Thanks to all

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I replaced the old hinges with the Blum ones suggested by Xsleeper and they worked perfectly! All the parts fit into the same holes - no drilling needed - and the door closes nice and easy.

Thanks, again, for all the suggestions.
