Quality Scribing Tool

Any recommendations on a scribing tool? I have the cheap brass one you get from Lowes but it slides around on me.

I go low tech. If the gap is 1/4", I break off a 1/4" shim... put my pencil on it, and slide the shim along the wall. If you have a shape to trace, an ordinary scribing compass works well... the kind with the knurled nut.

What are you scribing? For wood I go with something like Sleeper said or an inexpensive grade school compass, or for something more precise a mortise and tenon scribe. For metal I have several different General's.
