Cabinet to cart

I want to convert a small kitchen cabinet into a cart by cutting off the toekick and adding plywood and wheels. Would that compromise the structure? What is the best tool to remove the toe kick?

Welcome to the forums!

The toe kick is basically part of the base of the cabinet, both the bottom shelf and the sides are attached to that frame. You'd pretty much need to tear apart and rebuild the bottom portion. If you kept the cabinet intact would it be too high once you added support and casters?

I’m worried the overhang will unbalance the cart

You can fill the front part in with lumber.

I have a 14 inch wide x 24 inch deep standard cabinet with a Corian top that has casters mounted up inside the base. The bottom edges of the cabinet are about 1/4 inch above the floor. The front casters are mounted tight to the back of the toe kick. Since most of the load inside is away from the front and the floor is smooth there is no danger of it tipping forward. These are not swivel casters so the motion is strictly forward-backward. If you are using swivel casters I would think tipping sideways would be more of a concern than tipping forward over the toe kick.
