Basement Stairs - replacing treads with oak treads
Hi,
Currently, we have an unfinished basement with your average basement staircase (treads are from 2x12 wood?).
In any case, we are starting to look into changing these to be a nice finished staircase with oak treads, white risers and a nice handrail/balusters/etc.
The oak treads are thick but not as thick as the existing treads.
What is the best way to accomplish this?
Remove the existing treads and put a thinner underlayment on each stair with the oak tread such the that height of each is maintained, or ??
Thanks!

Code says no step can vary by more than 3/8" from any other step. Its best if you make them exact. You would just need to glue and screw a plywood filler onto the stairs before putting the new tread on. You would put on a new riser flush with the top of the plywood.
