Old mirror won't clean completely - streaks left

We have a mirror that is part of our fireplace mantel. Another mirror was added over it - not completely sealing the old one, just anchored with hooks to the mantle. I removed the outer mirror and the the original one a cleaning. There are some streaks that won't come out and don't appear to be from my cleaning product but are there from either a previous cleaning or maybe there is an issue with the class?

Is there a product or method I can use to possibly remove prior chemicals/residues that may have been left on the mirror?

Sometimes, you just can't get an old mirror nice again, however, alcohol cleans glasses really well, so I would try that.

Usually if a mirror won't come clean with water and a lot of elbow grease, nothing will work.

Try glass cleaner and newspaper, followed up with a microfiber towel. A window scraper probably won't do anything, but I would give it a shot.

Mirrors are made by applying the silver compound to the back side of the glass. Older mirrors can have the silver separate from the glass leaving odd streaks and splotches that can not be cleaned. Since you had one mirror stuck on top of another I assume that was the problem. Replacement is the only cure. In your case instead of removing the old mirror before installing the new one they just stuck one on top of the other.
