How to get cat urine smell out of a sofa?

We have a lovely velvet sofa, that a cat has done a wee on.

We've scrubbed it with dish soap liquid and vinegar and rinsed it again and let it dry, but it still smells.

I'm not sure how effective the cleaning has been, because the sofa doesn't seem to come apart, so we can only clean the surface of it or pour water inside...

 

Cat urine can not be removed. I don't care what anyone says.

 

Google cat urine remover, came up with a page of ideas, enzymes seem to work.

 

Second pugsl's suggestion. Our daughter has cats and one of them decorated a recliner. We used one of the enzyme products from WalMart and it did a pretty good job. The trick I've found, though, is to ignore the directions about just spritzing the area. I took the sprayer off the bottle and SOAKED the area so the liquid would really get down into the cushion and then set up a fan to blow on it until dry. Word of caution, the steps you took already and time lag until now may weigh against getting a complete de-odorizing, but nothing to lose.

Might want to test it on a spot to make sure about color fastness.

As a Real Estate Broker, I have been in many homes where cats have sprayed and rendered places virtually un-marketable.

One particularly bad one was where some tenants had allowed a group of 15 or more cats (my Wife gave up on counting at the number 15) to enter the attic and use the vermiculate between the ceiling joists as their litter box for a few years

It was terrible . . . . on moist cool days the area absorbed the humidity, and then re-dispensed the the odor on warm dry days. It was so bad it would bring tears to your eyes and render you blind for hours !

I used to come back from showing the place and the smell would have penetrated my skin and reproduce its disgusting scent whenever I took a shower..

The Owners of this place finally succeeded in ridding themselves of the odor by clearing out all of the loose vermiculite and associated debris and then saturating the wood with Orange Oil several times. They persisted and I got the place (on a nice 7 acre lot) sold.

Ten years later, I stopped by and asked the new Owner about cat smells and he wasn't even aware that there had ever been a problem !

So, all I can do is say some variation of Orange Oil may contribute to your solving this problem.

I would try the enzyme product and then give up. Often the foam is involved and it's generally not something you can clean.

We clean carpets after cats have done this but replace the pad underneath.

 

How can we compare a piece of furniture with real estate? We're talking about a couch. Even if I got rid of the odor, I couldn't sit on it again. It's just too disgusting.

 

Perhaps it would be best if you left the discussion.
