Removing stud to widen entrance

Hello all,

I am interested in removing a stud on the right side of my closet entrance. Currently the opening is about 54 inches wide, which makes it hard to find a bifold door that size. However if I remove the 2x4 with the Red X's in the picture below, the opening will be about 60-61 inches, which would be perfect for bifold doors.

My only question is would it be safe to remove this 1 stud? Currently there are 2 2x4's holding up the 2x4's holding up the closet entrance. As far as I can tell this is not a load bearing wall, and there is nothing else its holding up.

What have checked to make sure this is not a load bearing wall?
Must be an older house.
Makes me wonder when I see double jack studs and 2 X 4's laying flat like that with no real header.

Can you explain how removing one 2 x 4 can extend the opening from 54" to 61"?

If there's no header above the closet door opening then it's probably not bearing. Also if your ceiling joists run parallel to the opening it may not be bearing.

I wouldn't remove any studs without being sure.

 

I have to agree with Joe on this one. Further investigation is needed.
