Can You Recommend a Wireless Router?

Hi. I am looking for a new router. I currently use a Linksys Wireless G Router WRT54G V8 and I have no problems with it except that it lacks any USB port. I would like the router to meet the following requirements:

1. Have at least one 3.0 USB port, I want to connect an external hard drive to it.
2. Be inexpensive, yet reliable.
3. Have MAC address clone capability.
4. Work with Optimum Cable as my online service provider.

Make, model and price suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

What do you call inexpensive? Optimum shouldn't be a problem. I would probably stay with Linksys even though I heard the Belkin bought them.

I would start by contacting your provider and see if they have a list of compatible models from which you can choose.

I have a Linksys Wireless AC, reliable for not inexpensive. Not sure what your idea of inexpensive is, but this one is $99: Linksys 802.11ac Smart Wi-Fi Gigabit Router Black EA6350-4A - Best Buy
Mine was more, but this one has one USB port, while mine had two. Not sure you'll find anything less expensive.

I contacted Optimum and they said i could use any router. I know that I want at least one USB port for an external hard drive. What would I use a second USB port for? An attached printer?

Keep in mind that connecting an external drive directly to a router can file transfers & possibly diminish security as well.

IMO...I would stay away from Linksys.

They were the king in routers ten years ago. Today, there are better such as Netgear, Asus, or TPLink. Costco has the best deal and they have the famous Netgear AC1900 on sale recently. You may want to take a look into that.

I think in another thread, you also asked about usb in a router.

hi wrdiy. thanks for the netgear suggestion. the other thread did not ask for router brand/model suggestions. Rather, I asked whether a multipurpose kingston device was a good choice in order to connect an external drive to a router without usb. And the general consensus was that it was not a good idea. Hence, this current thread.

Cool that you are taking this direction. I have tried several linksys routers last year. For the bang for the buck, you can get more and better.

Here is a good site for benchmark:

I went this route and have two TB hard drives from western digital.. These connect to my network through the lan connection..

Good thing with the WD mycloud is I can add and access all my pic/music/vids through my app on my Iphone. This supports thumbnail view too which no one else is doing...
