Antivirus protection

I need to update my McAfee AV, and am not sure I have the best

I'm looking for best, most dependable product.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

I'd ditch McAfee in a heartbeat. It tries to take over your computer, and it will be a bear to remove.
I use Avast and have been very pleased with it. You have to ask "what is the best" and what makes it the best. More expensive?? Sure, but better, meh.

 

I use Malwarebytes pro on my computers. It's pretty seamless and does a pretty good job of protection. I spent I think 29.95 for the lifetime version and I'm running it on several computers.

ESET NOD32. No nags, no adverts, no pop-ups (except the one I've configured). Controls have granulatiry enough to suit me (I can schedule definition updates as frequently as every 10 minutes) and I never have to wrestle it for control of the PC.

 

If you are using Windows 10 or Windows 7 I suggest Windows Defender made by Microsoft and already on your computer. I was surprised one day it caught ransom ware trying to take over my computer. I scanned my computer using Windows Defender and I was then able to remove the ransom ware on my computer. I also used Super Anti Spyware just to be sure everything was gone and I had been to websites too I thought were safe you just never know for sure though. Best of all all of those anti-spyware programs are free that I used.

Just about any free anti-spyware program will be much better than using any paid version of any anti-spyware program with perhaps a few exceptions but none being McAfee or Norton. Those programs are so bad you need to use their proprietary removal tool to get rid of them and even then you may not get rid of them completely.

 

I've been using the free version of AVG for at least 10 years & probably more like 15 years. Never had an issue. It blocks threads automatically from time to time as they try to invade my computer.

I, too, have been using AVG free for better than ten years. Never yet been hijacked, wormed, trojaned or malwared. Then again, I might just be lucky.

The one time I used McAfee it was a "free" download from Comcast that never properly installed. That thing was so bad I had to wipe the hard drive and re-install everything.

 

I used AVG until version 8.0 was a resource hog. While my understanding is they resolved that issue long ago, I switched then to Avast and have seen no reason to switch away from it.

 

I opened my account ,and found that McAfee would not let me delete it,hence
my question here.
I don't trust any a removal tool of the sites advertised as having a removal tool
free,or for a fee

 

My laptop came with McAFee preloaded It took persistence but I was able to delete it from the laptop. You can't just click on remove this program and expect it to be gone

The best way to remove McAfee is to use the tools windows has however that doesn't usually remove the whole thing so you will need to use their removal tool. I had to do that with an old Toshiba laptop as I had bought the recovery disk it was cheaper than buying Windows by itself but it was full of bloatware including McAfee. I have had to remove garbage off of my computer before so it wasn't a problem and this should be very easy to for you to do they have easy to follow instructions.

 

Sorry but it doesn't make sense since it was 4 years ago that you had decided to abandon McAfee.

 

Kaspersky is the only anti-virus software I have ever used that blocked every threat. Believe it or not, nothing has ever penetrated it on my PC as far as I know. I used all the other products at one time or another. Kaspersky updates several times a day.
