DVD Player for Laptop with Vista?

My wife has a laptop with very little use on it that has Vista on it.
The other day she got it out to see if it would play a DVD for her but the controls just don't seem to work very well for FF and such. It does have a DVD player module in the unit but I don't think we ever used it.
I think we need an upgraded app or something?
She would like to be able to take the laptop with her when she travels to watch movies we own from time to time.

I use Vista and it comes with a crappy default DVD program. I use Realplayer Pro.
That's a paid program. There are free ones.

One free one I've used before is WINX
WinX DVD Player - Download

After you download and run it..... you can set it as your default DVD player.

TNX for the replies. Now I had better run out and grab some speakers. I forgot that laptop has a very small speaker.

Windows took out the DVD player in 8, that's when I started using VLC.
