Assuming you have a PC, not a mac....

Once good way is to purchase an external USB hard drive.

Then create a windows recovery disk. You can put it on a DVD if you have a DVD writer, or in windows 10 you can create it on a flash drive.

Then create a system image on the external drive.

The recovery disk will help you if your computer crashes and won't boot.

The system image let's you restore the computer to the state it was in when the image was created.

Neither of these backs up any of your data; you can use the windows backup utility to do that as well.

Did you get the operating system disc from the manufacturer ?

You paid for it but don't always get it.

Off topic nit pick: A Mac is a PC. PC means Personal Computer and doesn't really refer to the OS despiste MS misinformation in ads.
