Attach box step to beam?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Building this deck. Thought I'd just box up a stair and throw it down, did not consider landing/ground contact/footing/etc. so question/s is/are:
*Stacked boxes or stringers?
*Am I gonna be pouring concrete either way? NoVA, code is 24" deep.
*Comments on cantilevering off the beam/joists?

Details
21' long front edge needs the steps
Joists run 18" past the dropped beam, no rim joist yet
Ipe & tiger for decking, PT frame

Build stringers, put sonotubes piers in the ground below frost for them to sit on. (Sonotubes should all be level and parallel to the rim.) Simpson ties in the concrete to hold the bottom of the stringer.

Deck built attached to house, but no frost footings

So I had the bright idea to build a small 13x7 deck. I figured I would use deck blocks and built it as a floating deck. When we got to building it, the ground was pretty soft on the back side of the deck so we decided to use a ledger board instead of the blocks, but still use the blocks to support the rest of the deck. Now that it's all done I'm thinking it was a bad idea...if there is ground movement the deck will move with it, but it's anchored to the house and I'm not sure what damage will result. I'm more worried about damage to the concrete foundation than I am to the deck. I live in an area with maybe a week of below freezing weather a year so the ground never really freezes much (I'm assuming). Any thoughts on what issues may arise, and how to modify the deck if necessary. I can't do proper frost footings because it's a strata complex and not allowed.Read More

Tired of staining deck

Live in the Midwest and am tired of staining my deck every 1-2 years. I have looked at several options: 1. Replacing the entire deck with composite (eg Trex). Cost about $10,000. 2. Paint the railings but keep staining the deck. $250 DIY but not sure what product to try this year. 3. Looked at some rubber and plastic tiles that install right on top of the deck (Multyhome.com) but the rubber ones smell and radiate too much heat and plastic ones have no warranty. Am leaning toward #2 and do the Trex like in 2-3 years. Current deck is 10 years old and wood is in decent shape. Would love some input and guidance. Thanks.Read More
