Stripping paint from deck with a thinner and not a pressure washer

Hi.

I moved into this place last year and after winter has passed, you can see how the deck looks now.

I suppose the wood is quite old. So I don't want to use a pressure washer out of fear of gouging the wood.

I'm not all that handy so I'd appreciate it if you can recommend what products I should use to strip the paint before I paint it.

I live very close to Home Depot.

What kind of product do I use to thin the paint on wood? Do I use some kind of sander or brush to then remove the paint?

Thanks for the input.

Welcome to the forums!

You don't strip paint/stain off of wood with a pressure washer! I'd clean it with TSP [add bleach if there is any mildew] and rinse [either with a hose or PWer] and then apply a fresh coat of solid deck stain. Only what stain is loose needs to be removed. Complete removal of the existing stain still won't make that deck suitable for anything other than a solid stain.
