Does Asphalt driveway sealer expire?
#1

I have (3) 5 gallon buckets of unopened asphalt driveway sealer. I havent opened the buckets. I bought the sealer probably 4 or 5 years ago from lowes or home depot.
I've keep these in my garage and never got below 40 degrees. Most of the time its alot warmer than that.
I'm selling the house and will leave the sealer for the buyer if it is still usable.
Thanks for your insight.

I suspect sealer doesn't expire just like paint but it can go bad. No way to know for sure without opening the bucket. If it looks and smells ok it's probably ok. Heat can also be hard on stored coatings.

One manufacturers site I was looking at said make sure it doesn't freeze and if the bucket is bulged it's most likely bad.

Most latex coatings that freeze generally thicken up, if it's gone bad from heat there will be clumps of dried material in it. Sometimes old coatings will stink bad and while I don't think it necessarily hurts how the coating adheres or wears - it's no fun to apply. I suspect but don't know that smell might be caused by some type of mold.

Im gonna leave it for the buyer (new home owner). I'm not going to open and check because I'm not sure when or if he will use it.
If I get some feedback from the buyer after he tries it I'll come back and update this thread.
Thanks again folks!!
