Will my deck support a Hot Tub??

Can anyone help me would to determine whether my deck can support a hot tub. Let's say the hot tub filled with water and people weighs 5000 lbs (mine will actually be less).

For joists I have two 2x10's nailed together on 12 inch centres.
One end of the joists is supported by a beam consisting of three 2x12's and the other end is four 2x12's.
The span is 9' 10".
The 4 corners are supported by a concrete post on a footing (I believe it is at least 10 feet deep).

Any help would be appreciated. I think it will be good but am looking for someone with a professional opinion about this, not just gut feelings.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forums.

Although your post is very descriptive.... pictures help us to see what you see.
If you could post a few it would be a big help. http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html

Where are you that you have footings ten feet deep?

In general I would say any standard deck will not support a spa/hot tub no matter how sturdy it looks. I would pour footers and add supports under the spa area. The photo below shows the additional support underneath the spa area.

The Hot Tub is 80" x 80". Also while I said the span is 9' 10" the deck is 15' 5". (the deck is much bigger than this but this section is the only section overbuilt as it is where the hot tub would go)

Also I was wrong, code says post must be at least 4 feet in the ground, so they will be at least that deep (I live in Canada).

Here are some pictures.

If I recall from my days of designing structures here in Minnesota, decks had to be designed for a combined live and snow load of 60 psf. Using your weight of 5,000# and a footprint of 6' 8" square, your load on the deck is 113 psf. That's significantly over a typical deck design. Now that I'm retired, I don't have access to design tables any more. I would suggest that you contact an engineer who can look at the design from the footings, up.

I think one problem with your reinforcing of the original deck is that you are still using the same piers and footings. I would add additional support under the spa area though digging footers under the deck is going to be a pain.
