Advice with restaining a sealing a deck/porch (pic included)
Bought a house just prior to the winter. The front deck and porch need some TLC this spring/summer when all of the snow melts. The house is cedar sided and the siding stain still looks great. However, the steps are very worn and the deck boards and railings need to be refinished and waterproofed. Where do I start and how do I get it to match the house as much as possible?

Wrong time of year to be doing anything.
In the late spring when things dry out hit it with a brightner, let it dry a few day then stain it.
Try to seal it when it's to wet and you'll just be sealing in the moisture and dealing with mold from then on.

Any idea of what stain was used originally? Does it still bead water when wet?
I normally wash the wood with a bleach/water solution [rinse well] and apply the fresh coat of stain when dry. Since you'll just be staining the deck/steps and not trying to touch up the siding, the new stain doesn't have to be a perfect match. Your local paint store [not paint dept] should be able to help you match or get close to the existing stain color. Be sure you get a deck stain and not a siding stain!
