Florida outdoor ceiling planks
I want to renovate my outdoor patio ceiling. Its currently textured drywall and its been peeling for years. It is outdoor but covered so it does not get hit directly with rain. I am thinking of putting tongue and groove planks over it. I have attached a photo of an example, this is not my patio (I wish) but basically the same set up.
Couple questions:
1. What type of wood is best for outdoor?
2. What direction is best?
3. Ok to nail and glue directly to the drywall?
Any help would be appreciated.

#1 - most any wood will work, I like to stain [or not] and apply 2 coats of varnish/poly to the wood prior to installation ... just be sure to keep the tongue and groove free from any poly build up
#2 - perpendicular to the ceiling joists.
#3 - yes although if you have popcorn texture it will lay better if you scrape the texture first. Also you want to be sure the nails are long enough and place correctly so the wood is secured to the ceiling joists.
almost forgot
