How to extend deck posts above deck....

I am resurfacing an existing deck, keeping the main 6x6 cedar support columns and PT joists. A few of the columns are on corners or turns in the deck. I need to put 4x4 railing posts right above them. How can I join the 4x4's to the 6x6's? I was thinking of a half lap cut connecting with 1/2" galvanized thru bolts. If that is okay, how long do I need to make the half lap overlap? The cedar posts are about 8' tall off the ground.

See the DCA6 deck guide for proper attachment of guard posts.
