Azek lumber for steps
I'm building a set of steps outside a slider onto a patio. The design is basically a box on top of another larger box, picture a 2x8ft box sitting on top of a 3x10ft box leaving a 1' step around 3 sides. This is currently built using pt 2x6 with 3/4 plywood. I want to rebuild with decking and to be as maintenance free as possible. Azek now had 1-1/2" lumber and I'd like to use it instead of pt for the framing under the decking. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts about using the Azek material in this way? There doesn't seem to be much of a structural load on it since it is not carrying any span, just in compression under the box and decking.
thanks for any thoughts.

I'm not the pro in this forum but I would think that Azek would be too slippery when wet for steps.

Can you send some links? I've never seen any of the composite material made for framing but would be interested in taking a look.

Hey Marq, here's where I saw it. It's listed as 8/4 thickness under trim boards and I'm not seeing anything about using it like this so thought I'd ask around.

i got a deal on composite 2x4's (not Azek)... they matched the gray composite decking I put down, and I used them for horizontal members of the railing. Even the 2x material flexes a bit, so I would not want to use them for structural support, other than like the railing w 4'oc posts.

Azek is not structural and even the 8/4 cannot be used to replace structural lumber. It is trim. You would use it to cap your structural lumber.
For such a small box it might be okay since they are just sitting one on top of the other. But Azek dents and scratches under foot traffic, so I would not use pvc for the decking.

durable replacement to traditional wood in non-stress and non-load-bearing applications
Non structural material as noted!
