calculating deck material

calculating deck material

I have a stretch of wooden deck walkway that measures 32 feet long and 6 feet wide. The 6-foot planks installed along the width are 2"x6" (nominal size) boards. I'm going to be replacing these old planks with 2"x12" (nominal size) boards instead. The spacing in between each of the new planks will be 1/2". So I'd like to calculate or know the method for calculating how many lineal feet of the 2"x12" material I'm going to need to have for coverage. Probably a fairly simple calculation for somebody not as lousy at math as myself. Thanks for any comments/answers.

I'd rethink that plan as the wider boards will be prone to warp. There is a reason nobody uses wide decking.

Well the major portion of this quite large area deck measures 112 feet long by 22 feet wide and those deck planks, installed 30 years ago, are 2"x12" material and have not had any warping issues. Here's a picture for what it's worth:

Maybe it's the moisture and temperature difference, here in the southeast those boards wouldn't stay flat like that.

Well this is the southest. Southeast Alaska, that is.

Anyhoo, so any mathematicians got an answer for my initial inquiry here? Somehow with my half-azz math skills I come up with about 34 lineal feet but that just doesnt seem close to be right at all.

Ummm... 32x6=192'. You need 192' of 2x12.

You would obviously want to use 12' long boards. So 192/12 = 16 boards.

you need 16 2x12x12s.
