Waterproofing between house and free-standing patio cover

Hi all. New to this forum. I did a search before posting but couldn't find anything that pertains to this situation. I'll be replacing some hardieplank siding on my home will be removing a currently attached simple 10X10 lean-to type patio cover. When I put up the new cover I will be making it free-standing, but still within an inch or two of the house. What would be the best way to cover/flash.seal the gap between the house and the new patio cover where I won't be damaging the siding? I thought about going ahead and putting some flashing in that would extend over the new cover when I re-sided, but I think I'd rather not have permanently installed flashing under the siding. Maybe that's still the best way? Thanks in advance.
