Patio Questions

Hi everyone. I have a concrete slab stoop with two 4x4 posts. I have some questions I am hoping you can help me out with. Please see pictures. 1) I am assuming these posts aren't load bearing. Am I right? I would like to knock them out and replace them with a couple of 8" architectural columns. 2) I would like to dress up the patio with some sort of veneer material. What would you recommend that will last and can be installed by a somewhat handy DIYer? Would I have to power wash the concrete first? I'm assuming I would be able to cut it with a carbide tipped circular saw blade? Thanks for your input.

They are more decorative than structural.

What area are you located?

Coatings are iffy, depends on location!

I would maybe stain the concrete but I doubt I would cover it with anything.

You'd want to clean the concrete before you put anything over it. Besides concrete stain, exterior tile or flagstone are options.

Odds are that the columns are cosmetic but because the house above is overhanging it is possible that they are structural. The easiest way to tell would be to look at the bottom of the floor above for a beam across the porch. If it's just a rim joist it's probably not structural but if you see a doubled-up 2x across the opening then they are probably structural.

Yes, definetely pressure was the porch very well before doing anything. Stain or paint would be the only options I'd consider. Paint will eventually wear or flake but it's easy to re-do later to freshen up the look. Any kind of veneer tile, brick or stone probably won't have a long life because of your winters.

Thanks. Also, the foyer is two story, so the part that sits on top of the two posts isn't really connected to the house like it would be if there were a bunch of joists coming out over the stoop the full width of the overhang. I attached a picture. If the posts are structural then I probably wouldn't touch them. I had someone opine that he thought they were just decoration.
