Step Repair/Replacement

Hello,
Was hoping to get some guidance on how to go about repairing/rebuilding a couple steps from our walkway onto our back porch. It is only 2 steps. I was thinking about making block stairs as I am trying to avoid having to make stringers as I do not have a saw. I think I may be making this more complicated than what it really is. A couple pictures should be attached. Any input is appreciated.

Yeah you can just build a 20" deep box for the first step, put your treads on it then make another 10" deep box to set on top of it. But I think you will still need a saw at some point.

I am hoping the local store can cut the pieces of wood to size as long as they are quick cuts, or I may just bite the bullet and purchase a saw.

How would the boxes connect to the deck/railings?

You fit the 20" box between the 4x4s, then put screws from the inside of the box into the 4x4s. The boxes will need cross support in the middle sof that the treads don't bend. Then put the treads across. Then put the 10" box on top, and put screws from the inside of the box into the 4x4s. Then put the treads on. The treads can hang over the front of the box by 1".

Screw the box together with 3" exterior torx screws.

If the boxes are made of treated 2x4s, and you use 1" thick treads, the top of the first box will be 4 1/2" high and the top of the 2nd box will be 9" high. I don't know how high your deck is (how far it is from the ground to the top of the deck) but stairs are supposed to all be equal in height. With no saw, the only way they could all be equal is if your deck is 13 1/2" high.

I just measured. The ground to the top of the first step is 5". From the top of the first step to the top of the second step is about 6.75". The top of the second step to the deck is about 7.5" currently.

Am I able to use 2x6's to make the boxes?

Sounds like your total rise is 19 1/4".

if you use 2x6 and 1" thick treads (called 5/4 or "five quarters") the first step will be 6 1/2. The next would be at 13, the next would be 19 1/4. That's about as good as it gets.
