Deck pillar splitting

https://photos.app.goo.gl/TvEtPv8FepneURTF8Hi. I'm new to this forum so I apologize if I have posted this in an correct thread. I had some work done on my patio deck back in March including replacement if the pillars. One of them is now cracking where it meets the horizontal upper beam. The guy who did the work is telling me this is normal. I do see that checking occurs in wood but this is on a corner and I can see thru the split. I'm trying to figure out if it needs to be replaced. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

That probably happened when he went to drive the post into place. If you can tap it back together I would probably just squirt a bunch of PL polyurethane or gorilla glue into those gaps, spread it around with something think then clamp it until it's dry.

I agree, you could also use a screw or two instead of a clamp. I have a 4x4 oak post on my front porch that is a lot worse than that, I drew it back together with a couple of bolts. That fix has been holding for 25+ yrs.
