Joist hanger placement

Hi all.

I am going to install a small deck (4.5 x 4 Meters) that will go between 2 walls. The brick house wall and the brick garage wall opposite.

Question is in regards to the joist hangers.
I am assuming that i should attach a wooden beam to the wall first and then the joist hangers to that.
Can you just attach the joist hangers straight to the brick?

Also how far apart should i place the joist?

Welcome to the forums!
I don't think you're allowed to connect the hangers to the brick, in fact most brick facades are just a veneer and won't support addition load. Normally floor joists are on 16" centers although that is somewhat dependent on the type of decking you intend to use.

The problem is there is no good way to attach joist hangers to masonry so you first need to bolt a rim joist to the brick.

Unless I'm mistaken you can't secure the rim joist to the brick - it needs to be bolted thru the brick into the house's rim joist. Installing a freestanding deck is another option.

Correct. It is against code to bolt a ledger through brick.

Spacing of joists depends on what material your decking is and how it is running.

Also I never bolt a trim joist directly to a wall, I always use spacers.
