Porch replacement column to dimensional lumber or trim?

Greetings. I'm replacing the columns on my porch with new posts. I expected the existing posts would be attached to the porch's 3x12 beam but they're attached to face of cedar trim on the bottom of the beam.

Is there any reason I should cut out the cedar trim and install new posts directly to the beam? Or can I just install new posts to the face of the cedar trim as it is now?

My single porch column is also attached to the bottom of the trim, meaning yours are probably non-load bearing also.

There is no reason to install one way or the other, just less trim work!

cedar is one of the softest woods, not saying it'll drop too much but just make sure where the roof of porch is connected to other structure isn't gapping too much and then just caulk or whatever it needs, should have a dormer/apron flashing anyway to protect this, but just make sure not a gap created where bugs or water can get into. the compression is minimal compared to other regular building settling but just something I'd check.
