Sealing plastic roof panels

The translucent panels on our deck have deteriorated over 20 years and Im planning to replace them. One problem weve encountered is dirt and mold accumulates on the overlap of the panels. Is there some method or product that could be painted on or placed on the panels when we install new ones to prevent this?

It's the nature of the beast. Moisture gets under the lip and over time can mildew. It wouldn't be noticeable if the panels weren't clear. You could use clear caulk on the seams but I don't know how well that would do long term.

I've seen a few cosmetic cover-ups. I have seen wood and metal strips attached over the top of the long vertical seams. I have also seen a black strip painted along those areas. Neither does much to keep dirt out but it does make it less visible and the strips look more like an intentional design instead of just dirty.
