I'd like to put up the 4x8 "Eucatile" beadboard panels from Home Depot onto a ceiling but the product says it cannot be used there. I like them because they are fairly lightweight and inexpensive. Has anyone used them on the ceiling? Does anyone know why I shouldn't use them for that purpose? Thanks!

It's likely too thin and will sag.

There is a reason manufactures provide specifications for how their products should be used/installed, nobody here is going to go against that advice.

 

I have plywood bead board panels on my front porch ceiling and at 3/8" thick I still felt the need to add extra structure to insure it wouldn't sag. I'd be leery of using anything thinner on a ceiling.

 

To put it on a ceiling with glue, the ceiling would need to be drywalled first and you would need to use a notched trowel to spread the glue, covering 100% of the drywall with glue. And yes, as marq said, that is not what the mfg recommends.

By doing that, you ruin the drywall for any future use and create a nightmare for anyone who wants to change the ceiling back to flat drywall
in the future.

To put it in perspective, you would be covering the ceiling for $200 but it would cost someone $4500 to tear off that stuff, remove the drywall, tape and finish and repaint the ceiling and walls once it's done. Even more if there is cellulose insulation on top of the ceiling!

 

Thanks all. I should have added that I plan to nail as well; I thought that was a given but that the glue wasn't. I suppose it's drywall. It's a plain old painted ceiling. Marksr - what extra structure did you use?

 

I have used similar panels on a ceiling. The sheet is too thin to support itself and it does sag between joists. I put up 7/16" OSB on the ceiling first. Sheet rock would also but I had OSB lying around. Then I troweled on Power Grab adhesive to glue the bead board panel to the OSB.

 

I don't know what my ceiling is...painted drywall, I suppose. Would the fact that it's painted make a difference? I'm glad to see I can buy adhesive by the bucket. Did you use nails or screws too, Pilot Dane?

 

I added 2xs between the ceiling joists - but it was an open porch ceiling, no other covering.
