I've been planning out our kitchen and I want to replace all of the cabinets. The old cabinets were built in and are in pretty bad shape. Where are the best places to get cabinets? I've been looking at all the big box stores and online in different places but I can't seem to find a good deal anywhere. Where's your favorite place to get them?
Thanks

A lot depends on your budget. The materials used goes a long way in determining the cost. Box cabinets are usually cheaper priced than custom cabinets. You just need to keep looking until you find what works for you

I've looked at ikea and other places. When you say custom cabinets are you meaning cabinets that are built for my site specifically? I'm looking for solid cabinets that I can buy off the shelf. Any recommendations there?

Cabinets
The box stores have various grades from each manufacturer. You will need to have a long talk with a knowledgeable sales person. They can show you catalogs of the various grades with prices. Ask them to come to your home and measure the space. Then design the layout of the cabinets. Go with plywood frames. No mdf or fiber board. Solid wood only. Good luck with your project.
Custom cabinets are cabinets built by a local cabinet shop.

Yes, custom cabinets are built specifically for your job. Sometimes the cost of custom is right in line with similar box cabinets. Not saying you need to buy custom but it's always good to check all the options so you can make an informed decision.

If you are unhappy with store or local lumberyard prices on cabinets, you are going to have a problem finding cabinets in your price range.
You could look into ready to assemble. Some RTA have raised panel doors and other nice features, the boxes are assembled with cam locks.
Custom cabinets are not needed in any case. Standard sized cabinets are built in 3" increments, there is always a way to fill a given length of wall using cabinets and fillers.

Locally there are some cabinet shops that produce custom cabinets for about the same price as some box cabinets so IMO it's a good idea to check them out.
If your carcasses are in good shape and you are happy with the layout you might also consider installing new fronts on the existing cabinets. As Brian stated, cabinets aren't inexpensive. That is the main reason I built mine, the material cost was less than the cheapest box cabinets and mine don't have any particle board, MDF or fiberboard.
